Safety Features & Technology

Technology wears two hats in the 2018 Kia Optima - there's tech that keeps you safe in the form of driver-assistive technologies and tech that handles infotainment functions, including navigation and smartphone compatibility. In both cases, you can expect some rather high standards.

Standard & Available Safety Features in the 2018 Kia Optima

More than just technology, the safety features of the 2018 Kia Optima go deep - all the way to the Optima's skeleton. The 2018 Kia Optima is constructed using more than 50% Advanced High Strength Steel, and it features a standard advanced airbag system, with dual front, front-seat-mounted side, and full-length side curtain airbags. Using sensors, the system can detect the level of impact and whether there's a front passenger, controlling the deployment of the airbag in that case.

Other standard safety features include Hill Start Assist Control, a Tire-Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), a Rear-Camera Display, Rear Parking Assist System (RPAS), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Lane Change Assist (LCA), and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA).

There are some notable options, too, like the following available features: Surround View Monitor (SVM), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Advanced Smart Cruise Control (ASCC), Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS), and Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS).

Standard & Available Infotainment Features in the 2018 Kia Optima

Beyond all that serious stuff, the tech in the 2018 Kia Optima is also there to entertain and assist; in terms of standard equipment, that looks like this: USB/AUX Jack plus Dual Front Console 12-volt Power Outlets, a 7.0-inch UVO Touch-Screen Display, support for Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™, as well as Bluetooth® Wireless Connectivity and Hands-Free Support.

Of course, there's always more to be had; audiophiles who want to make the most of Apple CarPlay™ or Android Auto™ may want to opt for the optional Harman/Kardon® QuantumLogic™ Premium Surround Sound with Clari-Fi™ Technology and 10 speakers-a real front-row experience. More than that, there's an optional 8.0-inch Touch-Screen Display with a Voice-Command Navigation System.

2018 Kia Optima Trim Levels: Features and Options

The Optima is available in five trim levels. Each is very well equipped relative to its price, and there are several optional packages available at each level. Each model now comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen, blind spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors and rearview camera, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

  • The base LX is equipped with USB and auxiliary ports as well as Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free smartphone operation. You can choose between Normal, Eco, and Sport drive modes to adjust the Optima's throttle, transmission, and steering settings. An optional Convenience package increases driver seat adjustability and adds noise-reducing window glass.
  • The Optima LX 1.6T is essentially the LX model, but with the turbocharged 1.6-liter engine. It also has a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shift knob and the features of the Convenience package.
  • The S model gets 17-inch alloy wheels, LED fog lights and sporty rear LED lights, a rear spoiler, and sport black accents. The S model also comes with the features in the Convenience package. A panoramic sunroof is optional, as is interior LED lighting.
  • The EX builds on the base LX by adding 17-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, the additional USB ports, leather upholstery, and heated front seats with a 12-way power adjustable driver's seat. The EX is also available with a Premium package which includes the panoramic sunroof, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a power-adjustable passenger seat (with two-way lumbar), ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats. Go with the Technology package and you'll also get an 8-inch touchscreen, a sport body kit with LED fog lights and bigger front brakes, a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking.
  • The Optima SX is much like the EX when equipped with the Premium package. It includes upgrades like the 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, a sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights, a rear spoiler, and dual exhaust tips. The Technology package is available and includes automatic high beams on this trim. A Limited package is available with chrome exterior accents, a heated steering wheel, 360-degree surround-view camera system, and more.
